The annual Sisseton Winter Show which included more than 60 exhibitor booths featuring products & services for farm, home & business will be transitioning to the Sisseton Spring Expo. On the first Saturday in June, Veterans Avenue in Sisseton's business district is the site of the Sisseton Car & Motorcycle Show & Swap Meet, sponsored by the Lake Area Cruisers. Registration is held in the morning and the cars and motorcycles of all models and vintages are displayed throughout the day. Winners are announced during an afternoon awards ceremony, followed by parade of participants. On the Friday night before the show, the Dakota Connection hosts a "Cruise-In" event which features hot cars and loud contests. For more information call 605-698-7104.
The first weekend in June is the Fort Sisseton Historical Festival and Rendezvous. Cavalry troops and infantry units converge on the fort's grounds to form a military encampment complete with soldiers, women and children, and all the necessary tents, uniforms, horses, and memorabilia. The military is joined by fur traders and other participants of the Rendezvous. The festival covers the whole gamut of frontier life and settlement including fiddle music, medicine shows, an art and craft show, hoop dancing, songs and music from the Civil War, period dance instruction classes, and a military costume ball that bring history to life. Fort Sisseton Historical Festival →
The second weekend in June is the Hills & Valley Riding Club Annual Trail Ride. The enjoyable three-day weekend of camping, horseback riding and wagon train through the beautiful Coteau Hills draws more than 400 riders each year. A dance for attendees and guests takes place on Saturday evening. All ages are welcome. For more information call 605-742-0067.
The longest running annual event in South Dakota, the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate hosts its annual Wacipi (Pow-wow) at the Agency Village Ceremonial Grounds (7 miles south of Sisseton) during the Fourth of July weekend. Sisseton welcomes visitors from all over the area, as well as returning SHS alumni, for a three-day event that includes live entertainment, arts & crafts booths, food vendors, cooking contests, races, a golf tournament, a parade and so much more. Alumni gather at class reunions at various locations in the community on Friday night and then enjoy an all-school alumni banquet at the SMS Multi-Purpose Room on Saturday night. Teams of four made up of men and women of different ages compete in a list of different events. The rodeo is located at the Miles Nelson Arena located just north of Sisseton. For more information call 605-932-3635.
Community volunteers with the Glacial Lakes 4-H Rodeo annually host a rodeo at the Miles Nelson Arena in Sisseton where youth ages 8-18 from South Dakota compete in various events to qualify for state competition. For more information call 605-698-3152.
On a Saturday in mid-November, numerous Sisseton merchants showcase their stores during the annual Holiday Open House Extravaganza as a kick-off to the Christmas season. Local businesses & organizations provide lighted parade entries that make their way through the center of the business district on a Friday evening and end at the Middle School/High School complex.
